Hello Grim!
Thanks for visiting again. Things have been well, and I hope you have been well too.
I have been trying to reassess what I want to do with my personal site...it is difficult to say what I will plan to do, but I have definitely been thinking about this space lately. Hopefully that does not sound too ominous, haha. Ultimately, some form of personal site will live on though, that much I can be sure of. The independent web is too good to leave.
Cheers, and well wishes.
Hi Grim,
I wanted to respond and say I appreciate you sharing the existence of the Puparia documentary (and the Puparia short by extension); I had not watched either yet and it made for a great viewing.
Tamagawa had a lot of really great comments on the current state of creative mediums that a lot of us must also be very frustrated with. Both within and outside a professional capacity, the current state of art does feel deeply skewed towards the commercialized/consumerist; towards trends that can fuel more "engagement" or purchases... It seems like a tough nut to crack. Putting a certain monetary worth on art is sadly necessary for artists to survive in this society -- but how can the passion, joy, and experimentation in creation survive if creativity is condensed into a manufacturing line of stories/creations intended to only please for profit?
Maybe it is a little pessimistic to say we are in a time where a genuine, human message may be unwittingly drowned out by the very people the artist is trying to reach... But then, I also think there is comfort knowing others are feeling the same. It is reassuring to hear that you (and others) have been able to find the joy within your work again, especially with regards to remembering/finding the worth of said work beyond just the monetary or statistical. I don't like to demonize any particular medium, but it certainly seems clear that the current social media climate has not helped matters. Having a true space for yourself and your passions in this vast world (both online and irl)...seems so integral, if we are to remember who we are and what we love ourselves.
That all said, thank you for the thoughtful message, hopefully this ramble was not too incoherent, it just certainly struck a chord in me. I hope you have a good holiday season as well :)
